Statement by William C. Velasquez Institute (WCVI) President Antonio Gonzalez in Response to Congressman Henry Bonilla

WCVI stands by its exit polling numbers and turnout study results. Contrary to Congressman Bonilla's comments, WCVI's nonpartisan snap-count poll and turnout results and the methodology has been posted on our website www.wcvi.org since election-day. An update was made on November 19th to the results.

We would welcome the opportunity to debate Congressman Bonilla on the characteristics and tendencies of the Latino vote in Texas. The nonpartisan WCVI has polled in Texas since its inception in 1985 and is considered among the most reputable pollsters of Hispanic voting behavior in the United States.

Congressman Bonilla doesn't agree with our findings and that's his right. But citing a Republican pre-election tracking poll with less than 200 Latino respondents as proof of his contention that more Latinos voted for Perry than our findings is not only laughable, it is unscientific.

WCVI's exit poll and turnout study covered some 30 precincts drawn from a sample designed to represent 90% of the Latino vote. Some 800 Latino voters were polled. The margin of error was about plus or minus 3%. The fact is that Latinos voted overwhelmingly for Democratic Candidates in Texas in November 2002, especially Gubernatorial Candidate Tony Sanchez.

Over the next several days, WCVI will release its long-form results with an even more detailed analysis of the Texas Latino vote.
