State House Plan for Texas:
Plan reveals 8 new Latino majority districts
San Antonio, TX - The redistricting partnership for community education formed by LULAC, MALDEF, NALEO, and WCVI are unveiling their House Plan for the state of Texas on April 24, 2001, which will also be officially submitted to the House Redistricting Committee for consideration. The plan reflects the growth in opportunities for Latino communities throughout various parts of the state, allowing these communities to elect their representatives of choice. Based on an analysis of Latino population growth throughout Texas, the plan also supports 8 new Latino majority districts in areas where Latino communities warrant the opportunity to impact the electoral process in ways that reflect their needs. The following are recommendations by the partnership as to where these new districts should be considered:
